Characteristics
- Grey willow is a small tree or shrub usually 2-3m (6-9ft)in height, but occasionally it can grow to 10m (30ft).
- It's hairy twigs are dark throughout their first year.
Season
- The catkins open in March and April, before the leaves.
- The fruit ripens in May.
- Leaves fall in October.
Preferred Environment
- It is found in damp woods, fens and marshy places where there is readily available moisture.
- It is tolerant of acid and alkaline soils.
- It is light-demanding and able to withstand frequent cutting.
Wildlife Associations
- There are over 200 identified insect species associated with grey willow.
- Because of its early pollen, it is of great value to bees and other insects.
Uses
- Willow shoots have long been used as fodder.
