Grey Willow - Salix cinerea

Irish name - Saileach
Willow family - Salicaceae

Characteristics

  • Grey willow is a small tree or shrub usually 2-3m (6-9ft) in height, but occasionally it can grow to 10m (30ft).
  • Its hairy twigs are dark throughout their first year.

Season

  • The catkins open in March and April, before the leaves.
  • The fruit ripens in May.
  • Leaves fall in October.

Preferred Environment

  • It is found in damp woods, fens and marshy places where there is readily available moisture.
  • It is tolerant of acid and alkaline soils.
  • It is light-demanding and able to withstand frequent cutting.

Wildlife Associations

  • There are over 200 identified insect species associated with grey willow.
  • Because of its early pollen, it is of great value to bees and other insects.

Uses

  • Willow shoots have long been used as fodder.
