The Foundation Certificate in Health and Safety in the Workplace

Good health and safety standards rely on employers and employees working together to reduce risks and prevent accidents and ill health arising from work activities. Employers have a responsibility to provide safe and healthy workplace conditions as well as safe systems and methods for workplace activities. An essential element of any safe system is the knowledge and attitude of employees, and this demands proper training in the basics of health and safety, as well as specific training for individual tasks.

The Foundation Certificate in Health and Safety aims to provide participants with health and safety understanding which will enable them to be aware of and contribute to health and safety in any type of work.

In particular the programme will enable the student to:

  • Work in a safe and healthy manner and contribute to improving health and safety within an organisation’s policy
  • Identify key hazards in their own workplace
  • Understand the importance of health and safety rules and working procedures
  • Report potential health and safety problems
  • Be responsible for their own actions

A certificate is awarded on passing a short multiple choice test, usually on the day of the course.

Principles of Manual Handling Certificate

Principles of Manual Handling, is a stand-alone level 1 qualification, which complements the CIEH Health and Safety programme. It is aimed at those who carry out manual handling activities at work and introduces students to the hazards of manual handling, the risks involved and controls available and what to expect from a manual handling assessment.

Successful completion will prepare students to look carefully at their own work activities and contribute to the development of safer methods and tasks, in co-operation with their managers and supervisors. The qualification is not intended to train students to carry out manual handling assessments nor to provide detailed training on handling techniques. Topic covered include:

  • The process of manual handling in the workplace
  • Manual handling injuries and the activities which cause them
  • Manual handling assessment and control options
  • Responsibilities imposed by the Manual Handling Operations Regulations

A certificate is awarded on passing a short multiple choice test, usually on the day of the course.
