Amenity Horticulture NVQ Level 2
The Level 2 NVQ in Amenity Horticulture offers a choice of units in landscaping and nursery.
Landscaping covers the design, planning, creation and maintenance of designed landscapes, both urban and rural, and the interiors of buildings. It involves everything from the management of golf courses, parks and historic gardens to planning of domestic gardens and leisure facilities.
Nursery work covers the propagation of plants from seeds or cuttings through to the stage when they are ready to plant in a final location.
Estimates say the landscape industry is made up of nearly 38,000 businesses employing approximately 112,000 people, annually contributing £3 billion to the UK’s economy.
Qualification Structure for Amenity Horticulture NVQ Level 2
The candidate must achieve both mandatory units plus five optional units which can be chosen from either Nursery or Landscaping or a mixture of both.
Mandatory Units
- Unit CU2 Monitor and maintain health and safety
- Unit CU5 Develop personal performance and maintain working relationships

- Unit L11 Maintain the condition of plants and other resources during transportation
- Unit CU72 Propagate plants by vegetative methods
- Unit CU73 Propagate plants from seed
- Unit CU74 Prepare growing media
- Unit CU77 Monitor environmental conditions for protected crops
- Unit CU79 Identify, collect and prepare plants for dispatch

- Unit L2 Establish plants outdoors
- Unit L3 Maintain general amenity turf
- Unit L4 Establish and develop decorative amenity areas

- Unit L27 Use and maintain equipment and machines
- Unit L28 Construct and maintain water features
- Unit CU19 Construct and maintain boundaries and paths
- Unit CU20 Maintain and repair structures and surfaces
- Unit CU21 Construct new structures and surfaces
- Unit CU76 Maintain plants outdoors
Availability and Prior Knowledge Requirements of the Level 1 NVQ in horticulture
This NVQ is suitable for somebody with no previous experience, but is easier to achieve if the candidate works in horticulture or has some previous experience. It is available through volunteering with CVNI and for other groups by arrangement. Completion time is typically 9 to 12 months working on 1 day per week.
