Germany calling!
29 August 2007
This summer a group of 12 German students arrived in Northern Ireland as part of a work camp with Conservation Volunteers. The camp was organised in partnership with Kolping International, a charity which facilitates holidays for young people to help with social and environmental projects around the world.
The group of students worked with Conservation Volunteers for two weeks alongside local Conservation Action Teams, community groups and Green Gyms. During the holiday the group helped restore an Old Grave Yard in Maghera, Co Down, create a community garden with the Mater Green Gym, improve access along the Glen Road, West Belfast and remove litter from nature reserves in Poleglass. The group also had a go at dry stone walling in Delamont Country Park and worked with our Tree Nursery in Clandeboye.
The students enjoyed the varied experience of the different project and, undeterred by the wet summer, some of the group have offered to return next year during their summer holidays.
Before leaving for a tour around Ireland, the group hosted a German themed evening with a range of German food and drink and the students cooked traditional German food for local staff and volunteers. Guten Appetit!
