Tree planting at Norton's Cross
24 September 2008
Early in September this year, fourteen members of the Laird Norton family visited a spot in Northern Ireland that their relatives left more than 150 years ago to start a new life in Pennsylvania in America.
This place, known as Norton’s Cross, had been planted with native trees by both families and local school children two years ago – brought together by Conservation Volunteers and funded by the Laird Norton Foundation.
On 11 September 2008, the family’s president and other relatives came back to explore how the trees had grown during the last two years. They were impressed with the growth and happy to see their little “woodland” beginning its life.
In a small area where trees hadn’t been planted, the family members planted 30 more new trees to fill in the space.
The tree planting activity, in between the showers, was great fun and made special by making a historical connection between the land and descendants of a local family.
Roger de Freitas (a member of the family) provided a brief flashback to what happened two years ago and the connection between the family and Norton’s Cross.
This was followed by the task itself, which was, of course, followed by tea and scones.
