Spring into Action launched!!!

5 May 2008

VIPs at our event

BTCV’s annual ‘Spring into Action’ campaign was launched in Northern Ireland at the start of May at an event at Cavehill Country Park in North Belfast. The event, attended by North Belfast MLAs Nigel Dodds and Gerry Kelly and BTCV’s Chief Executive Tom Flood, celebrated local volunteers and the difference volunteers can make to the environment.

Conservation Volunteers have been working in Partnership with Belfast City Council over the last two months to restore some of the network of paths within the Country Park. The work has involved both local and international volunteers and has protected areas of the Park from erosion from the thousands of visitors each year.

Following presentations from Nigel Dodds and Anne Reid, Belfast City Council’s Countryside Officer, guests where given a guided tour of the newly restored paths where they met some of the many volunteers who have helped with the project. The volunteers were presented with certificates from Paul Cornes from PruPim before enjoying lunch in the Ark Room at Belfast City Zoo.

‘Spring into Action’ runs from 1 May to 8 June and aims to encourage people to try out different ways of looking after their local environment. It is supported by Prudential plc and the Cabinet Office and, in partnership with BBC Breathing Places, there will be 100s of events across the UK. From planting wildflowers to creating community gardens there will be something for everyone to get involved with.

Last year, Spring into Action involved over 18,000 people across the UK , who gave more than 31,000 days of time to improve 765 sites.
