Sean - our own Green Hero

24 September 2009

Bertie and Sean

Sean Fowler, a trainee from the Training for Success scheme in horticulture at Conservation Volunteers Northern Ireland, Clandeboye, has been awarded the BTCV Green Heroes ‘Better Life Award’.

The Green Heroes Awards are given out in recognition of the outstanding work people of all ages do across Northern Ireland to improve their local environment.

Sean became involved in the scheme through his careers teacher in school and it has allowed him to achieve his NPTC Level 1 certificate in Horticultural Skills. He is currently on a work placement as part of the Level 2 certificate, which he is thoroughly enjoying.

Since he started the scheme, Sean has gone from the class ‘raker’ to a team leader in a short space of time. Sean has matured and his confidence has grown which he says is down to his tutor. “He has been a really positive influence and is an excellent tutor”, says Sean.

The Training for Success scheme has helped Sean have a better lifestyle which is why his tutor, Bertie Fisher, nominated him for the award. “When I see the difference in Sean and the way he brings happiness to others it reminds me why I became a trainer. Sean is making a better life for himself and his family.”

Sean is very proud to have received this award and hopes to pursue a career in tree surgery and to eventually run his own business. Conservation Volunteers are very proud of Sean and would like to congratulate him on winning this award.
