Ring the Changes
22 January 2009
Volunteers from the Saturday Green Gym group recently attended an event on 6 December organised by Christian Aid, Eco-congregation Ireland, Friends of the Earth, Tearfund and TrĂ³caire.
The event, called “Ring the Changes on Climate Change” is a way of raising awareness amongst politicians and policy makers to make strong decisions on reducing global carbon emissions.
This was the second year in a row that this event has been run and this year it coincided with a global day of action during the UN Climate Change Conference being held in Poznan, Poland in the run up to the Copenhagen Conference in December of next year.
This conference is where world leaders will meet to agree a deal that will replace the Kyoto Protocol, which is due to run out in 2012.
The group met other activists and interested people on the steps of St Anne’s Cathedral in Belfast where they heard speeches from Bairbre de Brun, MEP and Jim Wells, MLA amongst others.
Then, at 12 noon, the cathedral rang its bells in synchrony with many other churches across Northern Ireland and the world, whilst all those gathered outside rang their bells of various shapes, sizes and volumes. We can only hope they heard us in Poland!
