Picnic in the Park

4 August 2008

Brooke Park was the setting for the BBC Breathing Places festival “Picnic in the Park” on 2 August 2008. Despite sometimes torrential rain, hundreds of people attended the one-day festival that entertained the whole family with music, arts and crafts and an array of stalls.

The wildlife stalls and activities both educated and inspired everyone about the importance of caring for our local wildlife and environment and encouraged the community to play their part.

Children participated in a nature and heritage trail, wildlife art workshops and enjoyed the city’s recent award-winning entry for the Garden Show Ireland that took place recently at Hillsborough Castle, entitled ‘Make Room for Wildlife’, designed and created by Conservation Volunteers and Derry City Council.

Something that also proved to be very popular on the day was the 100 bird boxes that were handed out throughout the day – built by Conservation Volunteers at a local workshop.
