Deer in parkland with trees

On a cold and frosty morning at the start of National Tree Week, children and teachers from Enniskillen Nursery School planted 120 native trees, ably helped by Conservation Volunteers.

Enniskillen Nursery is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. The school’s philosophy is to encourage the children to appreciate nature, add to their environment and continue to look after it.

It is fitting that the school is commemorating their anniversary by having each child in the school plant a tree – one tree for every month the school had been open.

Conservation Volunteers were happy to help them with this goal. In a flurry of pink wellingtons, the task was quickly completed despite the cold, wet, muddy conditions and a ribbon of newly planted trees was soon established alongside a meandering stream.

There was a lot of excitement and the keen tree planters were hard to stop at the end of the task. As one child said “It was ‘icky’ but we had big fun.”

Jenny Boyd, Principal at the school said “They will be able to watch their trees grow, so that in the future more children will be able to enjoy visiting the growing woodland classroom.”

The day concluded with a visit to see the park’s deer. Even though Rudolf did not have a red nose yet, after all the hard work in the cold, plenty of the children did!
