Nature's First Friends

14 August 2008

Volunteers and children in action

The official opening has taken place of Sure Start’s “First Friends” nature garden. The garden has, as well as environmental features, also a safety surface, to provide a protected play area for the children.

Sadly, some of the work was vandalised during construction but, thanks to the community and input from the Extended Schools Programme “Junior Wardens”, the work was restored during an organised joint action day.

Some of the features installed are: bird feeders and nest-boxes, an outdoor classroom with blackboard, minibeast log pile, willow dome and tunnel. Rhubarb, onions, strawberries, parsley and summer flowers were also planted in a child-accessible raised bed.
