Mater Green Gym wins award from Belfast Trust
24 November 2008
Mater Green Gym secured third place in a recent award ceremony held at the Stormont Hotel.
Each year the Belfast Trust holds a competition they call the ‘Chairman’s Awards’, which has five entry categories that reflect their corporate objectives.
The entrants are shortlisted to a final 3 by the Chairman, Pat McCartan, and a short DVD is made of each project. This DVD is then shown to senior management within the Belfast Trust who then vote for the project they feel deserves to win.
This year, the Mater Green Gym entered into the ‘Partnership’ category and was delighted to be shortlisted. The award ceremony was held at the Stormont Hotel on Thursday 6 November 2008 amid great enthusiasm and anticipation by all 15 finalists, not least because of the prize money of £10,000 for first place, £5,000 for second and £2,000 for third!
The Partnership category was apparently a tough one to judge and with two fantastic projects as competition, the Mater Green Gym was only too pleased to receive a 3rd place. Winners in this category were Dental Services for Belfast’s Homeless and 2nd place was a great project working with young people in a children’s home called Fresh Start.
The £2000 prize money will go a long way to help buy materials and safety equipment for the group and will help to secure its future.
Volunteers with the Green Gym were very happy that they were being recognised for the work that they do. The group are now looking forward to planning how they will spend the money over the next few months.
