Make Room for Wildlife
19 May 2008
Conservation Volunteers Northern Ireland, in conjunction with Derry City Council and ‘Sow & Grow’ Horticultural Unit, are creating a recycling-garden that will be attractive to wildlife at Garden Show Ireland between 6-8 June 2008, at Hillsborough Castle.
The theme of the garden is ‘Make Room for Wildlife’ and the garden is in the design of an en-suite bedroom. This bedroom will be made up of features that are good for wildlife. Examples of these features are:
- A bed made up from old logs – ‘Let Sleeping Logs Lie’
- A bedside cabinet which is a bee hive.
- A chest of drawers as an insect hotel.
- A basin as a bird bath.
- A lampshade which is made up of hanging bird feeders.
- A toilet which is a dry compost heap.
- A medicine cabinet full of herbal remedies.
Local schools and youth groups will also be involved in adding creative touches to the garden with art made from biodegradable material that eventually will rot away in the compost and become part of the garden.
