L'Derry and Gransha Wood gets new nest boxes

14 March 2008

Children building bird doxes

On Friday 22 February about 150 children and teachers from 10 local schools in the L’Derry area braved the weather conditions and arrived at Gransha Wood for a day filled with environmental activities.

The day was focused on educating the children in suitable nest box design, nest box siting, materials to use, general maintenance and much more.

The children put up nest boxes at appropriate locations around Gransha Wood, and were given an educational talk about wildlife and a nature trail. They even had the opportunity to build a nest box to take home and put in a suitable location, putting into practice what they had learned.

Nest boxes placed in gardens can make a real difference to the success of breeding birds.

Conservation Volunteers has been given the task of making and putting up 300 nest boxes in local parks around the L’Derry area on behalf of Derry City Council.

This event was also part of BBC Breathing Places and was broadcast live by BBC Radio Foyle throughout the day. We would like to thank Ulster Wildlife Trust, Derry City Council Biodiversity Officer, BBC Radio Foyle and Declan Duffy for their contributions on this very cold and wet, but successful, day.
