HBOS "Do One Thing" for local wildlife

Conservation Volunteers helped HBOS “Do One Thing” for wildlife in Belfast city centre last weekend.

Over twenty volunteers gave up their Saturday to work in St. Malachy’s Primary School wildlife garden. The garden is a haven for local wildlife, but needs regular work to keep it under control while still providing important homes for local wildlife. The garden is also used every week by the children as a fantastic outdoor classroom.

Staff from HBOS coppiced hazel, repaired a path and spread mulch around the garden to help improve the soil. All of this work will make it easier for the children to use the garden and makes the garden a better home for plants and animals for the children to learn about.

The event was organised by Conservation Volunteers during Wild Week to help HBOS make improvements to their local environment. These improvements will benefit the community where they are based – the landmark Halifax Media Centre is one of the school’s neighbours.

Brain White, Principal at St. Malachy’s Primary School explained “The work carried out by HBOS and Conservation Volunteers in our school wildlife garden would have taken us weeks on our own. It’s fantastic that a huge company like HBOS would want to help our little school”.
