Gathering Seeds in the Sunshine

15 October 2007

Children and adults collecting seeds

On a day where the weather was more like June than October, a small group of children and grown-ups set off around Carnfunnock Country Park to gather what they could from a bountiful autumn harvest.

As part of the Tree Council’s “Seed Gathering Season”, Conservation Volunteers, lead by Biodiversity Officer Andy Smith, guided people around the park and shared with them his knowledge of trees, native and non-native alike. Hints and tip were also available about how to grow any seeds that were collected on the walk.

A Chinese proverb, thousands of years old, says: Keep a green tree in your heart and perhaps a singing bird will come. Rose Muir of Environment and Heritage Service said: “The old proverb holds the truth – trees are homes for birds and many other living things. They are a critical part of our biodiversity.”

The enthusiasm of the children made the afternoon all the more fun as they investigated different fruits, mushrooms, insects, flowers and anything else that took their fancy!
