Free trees!

21 November 2007

Young children preparing to plant trees

To coincide with the start of this year’s National Tree Week (21 November – 2 December) Conservation Volunteers Northern Ireland is inviting schools and community groups to apply for free trees to improve their local area.

However, applicants are going to have to get their hands dirty and plant the native trees themselves! But don’t worry… we’ll be there on the day to organise the trees and tools for you, all you need to provide is some willing workers to dig the holes.

The important message that we are trying to convey is that trees are important, but planting them well and looking after them is also important. They are one component of biodiversity that will provide food and shelter for many other plants, insects, birds, mammals, fungi and more. With only 8.3% of Northern Ireland covered with trees, we are way behind the EU average of almost 40%. Every action that people can take to increase the native tree cover in their area will help!

Application forms are available from our website – or you could try applying online. Visit the Northern Ireland Tree Campaign pages for more information.
