ECO-UNESCO Award

Children inside willow structure

In February 2007 Conservation Volunteers L’Derry team worked together with staff and pupils from St. Joseph’s Boys’ School to create a living wildlife structure inside the school grounds.

The school is located in a very urban area and the efforts and hard work of St. Joseph’s boys have now been recognised by being honoured with the ECO-UNESCO Young Environmentalist of the Year Award.

The boys took part in all the work from cutting the willow in the freezing morning mist, to the very final stages of the assembly; they also created a DVD about their environmental work. This was an extracurricular activity where the boys came in after school and at lunchtime in order to be part of the project.

A project like this is a great example of how important it is to nurture the young local community to support biodiversity. The participating pupils from St. Joseph’s and Conservation Volunteers attended a ceremony to celebrate their achievement at the Guildhall, L’Derry, on 5 March 2008.
