Flax Mill boardwalk under construction

Volunteers in our South Tyrone Conservation Action Team have recently started a pathwork project at the Flax Mill Community Centre, Drumduff, between Omagh and Carrickmore.

They are building a new path that will wind its way through a birch woodland and then out onto a peat bog before returning to the community centre. The bogland section will consist of a 150m raised wooden boardwalk and cross a couple of old drainage channels. Out on the bog several viewing platforms will be built and interpretive panels installed.

The new path will allow school children, elderly users of community centre and disabled people to get out onto the bog to enjoy the unique flora and fauna associated with this threatened habitat. It will also allow people to learn about the areas rich heritage and the old ways of working the land.

It has been a fairly wet start to the project due to the unfavourable weather and muddy conditions but, occasionally, the sun has briefly shone. When it does, it is surprising how quickly the air fills with dragonflies and a myriad other insects, including some very colourful spiders.
