Drumahoe Chill Zone
4 July 2008
Drumahoe Primary School’s “Chill Zone” has finally had its last features installed. Using funding from BBC Breathing Places, a plain grass area at the back of the school has been transformed into a breathing, vibrant and environmentally-friendly place to promote wildlife and to be used for a variety of environmental and educational activities/projects, involving both current and future pupils of the school.
Some of the features created were a raised herb garden (containing most common herbs used in cooking), a willow dome and tunnels to provide a shaded area, as well as an imaginative and magical place for those very young.
Rowan trees was planted to attract birds and other wildlife, a greenhouse was installed where children will be able to grow their own flowers and vegetables, a compost area for kitchen waste and grass cuttings, a small bog garden with marsh plants, an outdoor classroom, story telling area – and, last but not least, a wormery to be used for school projects.
The Chill Zone will now be left to settle and mature during the summer holiday to be ready for the official opening when refreshed and chilled out pupils return for a new school year filled with environmental activities!
