Connswater Community Greenway
22 January 2010
The Connswater Community Greenway is a £32 million investment in East Belfast developed by the East Belfast Partnership and funded by the Big Lottery Fund, Belfast City Council and the Department for Social Development.
It will create a 9km linear park through East Belfast, following the course of the Connswater, Knock and Loop Rivers.
Conservation Volunteers Northern Ireland will be delivering conservation action days as part of this project.
These are:
6th February 2010 – Victoria Day Centre, Dee Street
Helping to restore the community garden and creating an area for growing organic fruit and vegetables. Build on your knowledge of organic gardening and learn new horticultural skills while providing a space for growing for local residents. The work will also involve cutting back overgrown vegetation and constructing raised planters
13th February 2010 – Eden allotments, Carrickfergus
Join us in a site visit to Eden Allotments, the largest allotment site in Ireland. The site visit will include a tour of the allotment site and a workshop on Organic Gardening for Beginners. Places are limited and transport will be provided – contact Helen (see below) to book your place.
13th March 2010 – Gorse clearance, Cregagh Glen
Clearing areas of gorse within the Glen to control the invasive species and help promote the biodiversity of the area. A great task involving cutting back and completely removing a number of gorse bushes, while enjoying the beautiful scenic view over the city of Belfast.
27th March 2010 – Wildflower planting, Victoria Park
Planting a range of native wildflowers to help improve the biodiversity of the park. Species planted will include ragged robin, ox eye daisies, red campion and self heal.
All the days are completely free and are open to anyone and suitable for all ages. All the days start at 10.30am and finish at 3.30pm.
