Community Wildflower Planting in Victoria Park

29 April 2010

Local volunteers joined Conservation Volunteers and the Connswater Community Greenway project to help improve the biodiversity of their local park recently.

Throughout the day, over fifty volunteers, including young families, worked together to plant 350 native wildflowers in Victoria Park. The flowers, a mix of ox-eye daisy, wood avens, red campion, bugle and ragged robin were planted to create a carpet of woodland flowers in the south end of the park.

Planting appropriate species of native wildflowers helps to compensate for loss of habitat in the wider countryside, especially as wildflower meadows are in decline.

It’s great to see families working together and planting wildflowers in their local park, this area will look amazing in the summertime when the plants are in full flower.

The event was the last in the current series of volunteer taster sessions aimed at promoting community involvement in making improvements to their local environment throughout East Belfast.

The next stage of the Connswater Community Greenway volunteer programme is the delivery of a three day Environmental leadership course, aimed at community volunteers in East Belfast who are interested in becoming involved with the Greenway project. The course will help develop skills as a leader of local environmental projects, community warden or guide for health and nature walks. The course will run from 19–21 April and is funded through the Connswater Community Greenway Project. The course will include a site visit to local environmental projects and practical demonstrations of tool use and practical environmental skills.
