Children on Copeland Islands

The Ballymurphy BBC Breathing Places project kicked off with a visit to the Copeland Bird Observatory for 15 children from the Ballymurphy Estate, West Belfast.

The children from St Aidan’s and St Bernadette’s thoroughly enjoyed the boat trip to the island where, during a guided walk around the island, they saw seals with their pups and all the work the volunteers have been doing for the visiting birds on the site.

After lunch the children put on their gloves and searched the shoreline for discarded litter, and they were surprised at the number of plastic bottles and other rubbish washed up on the rocks.

The visit is part of a project being carried out in partnership with Upper Springfield Development Company and the two schools, which will involve tree and shrub planting in the school grounds and in a public area near the ‘Top of the Rock’ community building.
