Volunteers hedge planting

Children from the PAKT after school club have been busy improving the grounds of Northlands Fold, Carrickfergus.

The group of children were out this week planting a native hedge along the boundary of the Fold with help from Conservation Volunteers.

They planted a mixture of guelder rose, hawthorn, hazel, rowan and bird cherry to improve the biodiversity of the site and to provide shelter for birds in the future.

The project is part of an after school club run in partnership with Northlands Fold, PAKT and Conservation Volunteers which involves residents from the fold and local children.

The volunteers have helped make bird feeders, planted vegetable seeds and shrubs and wildflowers on the site. The project continues with a series of planting tasks in the garden and the provision of seating and stepping stones.

The project has been funded through the Department of Social Development and Northern Ireland Environment Agency.
