Biodiversity and the End of Term!

Children enjoying activities in the Ormeau Park

Thanks to funding from Belfast City Council and support from Sainsbury’s, Conservation Volunteers Northern Ireland and pupils from three primary schools across Belfast celebrated the end of the school term with a day of environmental activity in the Ormeau Park on Tuesday.

The activities in this “Environmental Adventure” were both fun and educational, calling on the young participants to use both mental and physical skills to complete the range of activities on offer. To give the day a global perspective, Sainsbury’s provided Fairtrade fruit made into smoothies for the thirsty kids and dipped in chocolate. This gave them an introduction to the importance of both Fairtrade and healthy eating. The children also received a reusable cotton “goody-bag” full of recycled “goodies”.

Andy Smith, Biodiversity Officer with Conservation Volunteers Northern Ireland, explained “Conservation Volunteers works with thousands of people each year to highlight Northern Ireland’s amazing biodiversity. By working with Belfast City Council and Sainsbury’s, we are sure that the children had a fun day out, but that important messages will be well remembered”.

Sainsbury’s Affairs Officer, Arlene Thompson, said: “Sainsbury’s is committed to sustainable sourcing and to Fairtrade farmers and their communities. By using Fairtrade fruit and Fairtrade chocolate we are educating children about the importance of Fairtrade while demonstrating the easy and delicious ways to get your five portions of fruit and vegetables a day.”
