Belfast Marathon Update
24 May 2010
May Day this year saw three teams of people run and walk Belfast City Marathon to raise vital funds for Conservation Volunteers Northern Ireland.
The three teams from Belfast, Bangor and L/Derry were made up of both staff and volunteers.
The Belfast team, named the “Green Goddesses” consisted of; Lindsay, Maria, Dianne , Amanda and John(!).
The Bangor team of staff and trainees from the Training for Success programme in Clandeboye were Ross, Robert, Bertie, Karl and Sean and were named the “Horticultural Hunks”.
Ivan and three volunteers, Hilary, Patrick and Danelle, walked together and completed the 9 mile walk of the marathon.
The two relay teams, the Green Goddesses and the Horticultural Hunks, battled hard to be the first to cross the finish line for Conservation Volunteers Northern Ireland and complete the 26.2 mile marathon, but it was the Hunks that crossed the finish line first, followed eight minutes later by the Goddesses.
After completing the 9 mile walk in just under three hours Ivan and his team of walkers appeared fresh faced and unnerved by the whole experience.
This year was the 29th Annual Belfast City Marathon and was the biggest to date with more than 18,000 competitors taking part. All the competitors really pushed themselves both physically and mentally to complete the challenge.
“It was really tough going as I had never done anything like this before, but now I can’t wait to run it again next year”, said Amanda of the Green Goddesses.
Everyone at Conservation Volunteers Northern Ireland would like to congratulate the participants on completing the marathon.
