Health for Kids 2007 awards ceremony

Our Belcoo Green Gym Project has been recognised for its outstanding contribution to child health at the national Health for Kids Awards 2007.

Belcoo Green Gym was highly commended in the award category for “Community Partnership Ages 2-18” at a special awards presentation in London on Friday 5 October 2007, with special guest Olympic Champion Sally Gunnell, OBE.

The project is a working partnership between Belcoo Primary School, Belcoo Pharmacy, the local community and Conservation Volunteers Northern Ireland’s Fermanagh office. Based predominantly within the grounds of the school, the project tackles general health issues such as lack of physical exercise and healthy eating, by undertaking practical environmental work.

Through involvement in the Green Gym, pupils have developed an interest and motivation towards healthier lifestyles, including exercise and healthy eating into their daily routine.

Dianne Keys, Green Gym Project Manager from Conservation Volunteers said “We are delighted to have been selected as an example of best practice nationally, from amongst hundred of schools and organisations working with young people across the UK. Despite all the bad news we hear about the health of children and young people, there is lots of good work taking place.”
