We held a celebration of the “Dig it & Eat it!” Green Gym project on 20 March at Presentation Primary School, Portadown.

Bairbre de Brun, Member European Parliament, attended the celebration to help pupils plant an apple tree in their school food garden.

Speaking at the event Bairbre de Brun said “Pupils can be leaders in their local communities and can show how our lifestyles can affect our health and our environment. We can make a difference and we can tackle climate change if we all work together.”

Pupils from the school, along with St John’s in Kingsisland and St. Patrick’s in Newry have been taking part in the Dig it & Eat it project.

This is a fun, interactive programme to support learning about healthy eating, care of the environment and provides an opportunity for outdoor physical activity.

The pupils have created a school food garden in their schools, grown and eaten their own fruit and vegetables.

“I really liked tasting the fruit and vegetables which I grew but not the celery. Digging the beds and building a compost bin was quite hard work but I really enjoyed it. I now bring a healthy break every day.” Primary 4 pupil, St John’s Primary School.

The project was co-delivered by Conservation Volunteers and the Southern Health and Social Care Trust Dietetic service.
