Beech

Fagus sylvatica

Beech leaves

An-attractive tree which grows well in Ulster to form fine specimen trees. It may also be trimmed to form a dense hedge which retains the dry brown leaves, making it colourful and windproof in Winter. Beech do not like acid or wet soils.

Beech mast may be collected from the ground, discarding the first to fall, which is often infertile. Test by putting into water – the infertile seeds float, heavier fertile seeds sink.
There are good ‘mast years’ every 5 – 6 years. Beech mast is a popular food for birds especially finches and wood pigeons.

Seed can be sown immediately after collection into a well drained seedbed. Cover seeds well (see advice for oak). The young seedlings must be protected from frost.
