World Environment Day 2005

Sunday 5th June 2005. World Environmental Day. Conservation Volunteers organises an “Environmental Adventure”... but what does that mean?
World Environment Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. Another resolution, adopted by the General Assembly the same day, led to the creation of the United nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
The day is celebrated in many ways, including street rallies, bicycles parades, green concerts, essay and poster competitions in schools, tree planting, recycling efforts, clean-up campaigns and much more. In many countries, this annual event is used to enhance political attention and action.
Well… I could try to explain to you what happened during our very own “Environmental Adventure” on June 5th clear and simple. But I should tell you one thing – this is just my own personal, funny point of view!!!
The day was designed as a big adventure for young people, in a lovely place (Scrabo Country Park) to engage them in activities that would be fun! But, not only fun, educational as well – to teach them a little bit about how important our natural environment is and how we should look after it.
My job was to walk around, take pictures and enjoy watching families playing Conservation Volunteers’ games… Games?!? I hear you ask. Yes! To play, in an environment rich in trees, flowers and small creatures, is something significant. To regain a sense of our own natural heritage was the main point for me.
I have still some pictures on my mind. Children running, looking for new funny games. Parents watching happy children and Conservation Volunteers people smiling and looking for… another adventure!!
