Threemilewater Angling Club has worked hard for many years to improve the local river for the benefit of fish and other wildlife. Once a large lake created by a dam, the area is now a conservation area, handed over to the club by Newtownabbey Borough Council.
The river has cut deep into the accumulated silt from the dam and a number of alder and willow trees have naturally regenerated around the river. We thought a little additional help was necessary to provide cover for the breeding fish – fish that have returned to the river thanks to the good work of the club!
On the day, pupils from Hollybank Primary School came along to help with the hard work. In no time at all, 300 more trees graced the river banks to provide food and shelter for the fish and the rich local bird life. The people who visit the area should also benefit, whether they come to fish or walk the dog.
