St. James' Primary School, Newtownabbey

Three children with their new tree

Date: 2 March 2007

No. of trees planted: 10

No. of people involved: 23

St. James’ Primary School are very lucky to already have some big trees in their grounds as well as a dense hedge of trees along a fence. They even have a small garden with plenty of daffodils and a pond that we are sure will be bursting of wildlife in spring. The school applied for some trees to plant near their willow dome to add a small woodland area.

Although the day was grey and the grass where we were planting was also very wet, we still had some volunteers eager to get their hands on the spades. The children, equipped with very fashionable plastic bags on their feet, dug the holes for the trees in the very muddy ground.

By the end of the day 10 more rowan and birch trees were added to the playgrounds for the benefit of the pupils, teachers and, hopefully, some birds that will enjoy the food provided.
