Overlooking Belfast, St. Aidens Christian Brothers’ Primary School is situated beneath the Belfast Hills. Outstanding views also means exposed to the wind from the south-east. To provide some shelter and, hopefully, to attract a range of birds and insects into the school we planted a selection of native trees.
In the warm, early spring sunshine, 20 children from various classes planted downy birch, rowan and hazel around the playground. Some of the trees were a little larger than usual – in an attempt to prevent them being trampled by little feet chasing after the football at break times! This meant deeper and wider holes, which the children dug with extra gusto. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day for all involved!
