As part of their “xl Project”, a group of pupils at Lisnasharragh applied to the Northern Ireland Tree Campaign for some trees to plant in a wildlife area that they were going to restore. The area had been created, but then neglected, and drastically in need of attention.
The pupils visited Conservation Volunteers Northern Ireland’s tree nursery for a guided tour and then Andy Smith, Biodiversity Officer, went along to the school to see how we could help. A day cleaning out the pond, pruning some very overgrown shrubs, creating habitat piles and planting a hedgerow was planned.
Despite the falling snow, which soon disappeared, the children very quickly warmed themselves up working hard on the garden and the job was finished just in time for the bell to ring for the end of the school day!
