Cullyhanna Residents Community Group, Newry

Date: 25 February 2005
No. of trees planted: 175
No. of people involved: 30
A number of years ago the road through Cullyhanna was widened from a single track road. A line of trees alongside the road were felled to enable this. A recent attempt to plant another line of trees failed, mainly through vandalism. The trees were quite big, which tends to attract attention of the wrong kind.
Alan Brecknell, Chairman of the Residents Group, applied for some trees for another go at replacing the felled trees. This time we decided to plant a number of small trees to try and conceal them from potential vandalism. They were also to be planted by members of the community and local schoolchildren to give a sense of ownership.
A mixture of downy birch, alder, hazel, rowan and grey willow were planted in record time before the wonderful spring weather turned wintry again!
