BTCV : CVNI : Tree Campaign

Creggan Country Park, L/Derry

Gabry and girl planting a tree

Date: 9 and 12 December 2005

No. of trees planted: 850

No. of people involved: 265

It was such a big project it took two days! On both days in Creggan Country Park we started early in the morning to prepare a warm welcome for all the eager tree planters coming along to improve their local biodiversity.

The welcome complete, the tree planting began. The activity was made even more fun as we were able to enjoy the panoramic view of the hills in the north and towards the city.

Creggan Country Park is a watersports, outdoor pursuits and angling centre in L/Derry, which covers an area of about 100 acres. Since Creggan Country Park has adopted a “green” approach to development, they applied to the Free Tree Scheme, to increase the local tree cover in the park. The young planters had a good choice of different native trees to plant including Alder, Ash, Sessile Oak, Bird Cherry, Grey Willow and Rowan.

We had good fun and are looking forward to visiting the Country Park again to see how the trees planted in 2005 are getting along.

The following local schools took part in this tree-planting extravaganza:

  • Rosemount Primary School
  • Long Tower Primary School
  • Fountain Primary School
  • Gaelscoil Eadain Mhoir
  • Foyle View Special School
  • Holy Child Primary School
  • Nazareth House Primary School
  • St Eugene’s Primary School
  • St John’s Primary School
