A hectic day was in store when we attempted to give every girl in the school (it’s a girl’s school!) the opportunity to plant a tree. When the school was developed, much of the grounds were covered in grass, but not many trees! Hannah Northridge, teacher at the school, wanted to change this and applied to Conservation Volunteers Northern Ireland.
We had ten specific areas around the school to plant up. Some of the areas got only three or four trees. The main area was to receive nearly two hundred trees.
A wide variety of trees were planted to encourage birds and insects into the school and to provide a diversity of habitats. They will also improve the look of the school and soften some of the hard edges. Despite the cold, we managed all 335 trees thanks to the enthusiasm of the planters!
