Bog Meadows, Belfast

mum and daughter planting hedge

Date: 3 February & 13 March 2005

No. of trees planted: 550

No. of people involved: 86

On two occasions Conservation Volunteers Northern Ireland supported the work of the Ulster Wildlife Trust at Bog Meadows in Belfast. The first involved a ‘flowery hedge’ near the bird hide, while the second extended an existing native hedge.

The ‘flowery hedge’ was planted by a local young people’s conservation group and mixed together Gorse, Hawthorn, Holly, Dog Rose and Blackthorn to encourage insects.

The traditional native hedge was planted by visitors to the site during an open day. If the hedge is looked after, it will provide years of shelter and food for the bird population that visits the reserve.
