Children by a pond

Date: 18 March 2008

No. of trees planted: Err... one pond!

No. of people involved: 16

Following a visit to the school in 2007, where we cleared out a corner of the school and planted a few trees, we returned this year – not to plant trees, but to repair their pond!

Built about 15 years ago, the old pond liner was holed and leaked badly. Overhung by a number of trees (to be removed by NIE), the pond filled up with leaves in the Autumn and supported little in the way of life.

With the help of the P7 class – boys out first followed by the girls, and then all together – we emptied the old pond, removed the damaged liner, reshaped the hole, lined the hole with newspapers and sand and finally added the new butyl liner.

The final task was to fill the new pond with water… this would have been the simplest task had the hosepipe been long enough – which, of course, it wasn’t! A chain of buckets was set up and, very quickly, the pond was full. A bit of landscaping had the whole area looking like it had been there for years… almost!
