Ashlea Primary School, L/Derry

Date: 1 March 2005
No. of trees planted: 180
No. of people involved: 40
Thirteen years ago, Conservation Volunteers Northern Ireland planted native trees at Ashlea Primary School in Tullyally. These trees are now growing strongly around the perimeter of the school. The school applied for more trees to add an extra dimension to the school grounds.
This time the trees were planted by Key Stage 2 children, while staff from Conservation Volunteers Northern Ireland offered advice and help. The trees were a mixture of pedunculate oak, rowan, downy birch (for the damp ground in the school!), bird cherry, ash and hazel in an attempt to mirror native trees growing nearby in the Sperrins and along the River Faughan.
