Titanic challenge!

On a sunny August morning in 2011 the North Down Conservation Action Team undertook an unusual challenge.
They were tasked with utilising an unused 'stoned' area at Andrews Memorial Primary School in Comber and turning it into a raised bed to help the school mark the centenary year of the launch of the Titanic... whose school name sake helped design.
The project leader hit upon the idea of creating the bed to mimic the 'footprint' of the ill-fated cruise liner. So a boat-shaped bed created from timber sleepers and posts was constructed by the team.
With the school raising the money for the project themselves and a parent supplying the topsoil required to fill the 'gargantuan bed' the seeds were sown so that the pupils could be fully involved in using and learning about how to grow vegetables and plant... and, most importantly, harvest their very own crop.
Fast forward to 14 December 2011 and the school received word that they had won a prize in the inaugural 'Grow Your Own' competition sponsored by MLA Sam Gardiner and received £1000!
The school enjoyed a harvest of potatoes, leeks, carrots and beetroots to name but a few.
We looks forward to working again with the school in other ideas to mark the Titanic centenary.
