The Six Mile Water river corridor is an important haven for many species of plants and animals. Antrim Borough Council are keen to have as many local people become “Six Mile Water Guardians”, to help ensure its future for other generations. The scheme is supported by Antrim Borough Council and the BBC Breathing Places Programme, through the Big Lottery Fund.
A free programme of training sessions and outdoor activities is on offer for all Six Mile Water Guardians who join the group.
The first training session was held on 12 January 2008, with a “Woodland Management” training day, provided by Conservation Volunteers. This was an opportunity to get to know more about native trees, discover how to improve our woodlands for wildlife and to have a go at building habitat piles to help encourage invertebrates and fungi to the area.
The remaining training sessions between now and June 2008 will provide something for everyone. Each session is free of charge and lunch will be provided in some cases!
