Nursery Trip for Traveller Children

23 July 2007

Traveller children from the Glen Road enjoyed a day out at Conservation Volunteers’ wildflower nursery, learning about native flowers and vegetable growing. The children have planted a number of native shrubs and wildflowers on their site on the Glen Road and visited the nursery to discover where the plants come from and how they are grown from seed.

The fourteen young enthusiasts learned about the biodiversity of Northern Ireland’s natural landscape and the importance of their own planting in relation to the topical global issue of climate change. The children enjoyed discovering a range of native flowers in full bloom and lost count of the number of different flowers they found.

The visit was the first in a series planned to develop the children’s knowledge of environmental issues and to encourage them to help improve their own surroundings on the site they live.

Conservation Volunteers have been involved with the Traveller community on the Glen Road for over ten years and the project is part of the Green the Glen Road Project, supported by the Big lottery Fund.
