Homegrown BBQ

7 July 2010

The Saturday Dig It and Eat It! group celebrated the end of the first stage of the project with a barbecue at the allotment site in Knockbracken Healthcare Park.

The project had come to an end after fifteen weeks of learning about the methods and benefits of ‘growing your own’ and putting them into practice.

The Saturday Dig It and Eat It! project participants have transformed the site from a blank canvas to a fabulous allotment site bursting with fruit and vegetables. “Isn’t it amazing how different it looks from the start to now?” said Jack Brown, a 6 year old participant.

The allotment holders have changed their attitudes towards ‘growing your own’ since starting the project and are currently reaping the benefits of it, with some even cycling to the allotment site! They have sown seeds and nurtured them until they have become a successful harvest, ready to eat.

On Saturday some of the allotment holders began to harvest their potatoes which had been growing since March. Some of the harvested crops were then used in salads for the barbecue.

After the barbecue Lindsay McManamon, Project Officer, thanked and congratulated the group on their success with the project. “I have been so impressed with the work and have thoroughly enjoyed working with everyone involved. I would like to thank you all for making this project a success.”

The next phase of the Saturday Dig It and Eat It! project will begin on Saturday 11 September 2010 for nine weeks where harvesting and storing produce, cookery demonstrations, willow weaving, hedge planting and many more sessions will be covered.
