Group of Green Heroes

14 October 2009

The BTCV Green Heroes ‘Community Group of the Year’ award in Northern Ireland has been awarded to our L/Derry Conservation Action Team.

The Green Heroes Awards are given out in recognition of the outstanding work carried out by volunteers of all ages across the UK to improve their local environment.

Conservation Action Teams provide a full range of environmental land management services throughout Northern Ireland and are made up of both staff and volunteers. The team were up against ten other groups in this category and were nominated for the award by Conservation Projects Development Officer in L/Derry, Ivan Black.

The group have made a real difference to their environment and community working with many different groups on hundreds of projects, often working a seven day week and operating a twenty four hour service when required. “Helping people gives you a buzz, its very rewarding”, says William from the Conservation Action Team.

According to Ivan Black, the group, which is made up from all sections of the community, have worked extremely hard to deliver their environmental message. “All the volunteers have a common purpose; to achieve completion of any task they are given but in doing this they leave politics and background behind”.

The team is made up of a strong group of friends and operates as one unit where differences are forgotten. “We are one big team, just like a family,” explained Paul, another member of the Action Team.

Conservation Volunteers are very proud of the L/Derry Action Team and would like to congratulate them on winning this award.
