First Class Veg!

9 October 2007

The Dig it and Eat it! group based at the Salvation Army won first prize for their runner beans at this year’s Garden Gourmet event at Botanic Gardens, Belfast.

This is only the second year that the group have entered their produce in the show. Last year the group came away with a couple of seconds and thirds, but this year they scooped the top prize for their beans!

The news of the win is especially welcome this year as it hasn’t been the best year for vegetable growing due to the very wet summer, although they enjoyed harvests of early potatoes, salad leaves, peas and plenty of beans!

The group is understandably over the moon with their success and are now scouring the seed catalogues for next year’s monster marrow contest!

The Dig it and Eat it! project works with community groups over the greater Belfast area and is always looking for new groups. The project is a combination of physical activity, nutritional education and horticultural knowledge. If you know a group that may be interested in the Dig it and Eat it! project please contact Jenny McGetrick, Green Gym Project Officer on “J.Mcgetrick@btcv.org.uk”:mailto:J.Mcgetrick@btcv.org.uk
