Conservation Volunteers Northern Ireland has been hard at work rejuvenating the woodland in the historic parkland of Finnebrogue, Co. Down. The woodland was in desperate need of restocking as deer had been grazing on the smaller trees that had seeded naturally.
The “Conservation Action Team”:http://www.cvni.org/cats/ planted mainly native trees including Hawthorn, Ash, Wild Cherry and Oak, as well as non-native Beech. It is hoped that the trees will have a better chance to grow as the deer have now been excluded from the site.
The restocking of the woodland will help support “biodiversity”:http://www.cvni.org/biodiversity/ in the area and will help it survive into the future.
Some volunteers from the Southern Eastern Regional College came out to the site to give us a hand. The group, who had no previous experience of conservation work, were very enthusiastic and really enjoyed the day.
